Business The Key Concepts
Published in Paperback by Routledge (15 January, 2002)
Author: Mark Vernon
Average review score:

Great book for business students and managers
This book is an excellent guide to business studies up to MBA level. Hundreds of terms and subjects are defined and then discussed in practical context, providing a series of introductory essay on the subjects. It is a real help with my studies, clearly explaining complex issues. The book also includes a long list of business books that allows you to go into a specialist area in greater depth. The list alone is more than worth the price of the book. I found it an essential tool and would recommend it to anybody as an introduction to business studies, and a guide to where to look next. The only complaint I have is the price of the hardback but the softback is great value.

The Collected Poems of Vernon Watkins
Published in Paperback by Golgonooza Press (30 September, 2000)
Authors: Vernon Watkins and Brian Keeble
Average review score:

The Singing Lush Welshman to Dylan Thomas' Welsh Lush
In each generation only so many poets are allowed to flourish. The determining question is not one of quality, oh no; the academics and public need their one pinnacle figure for each style, type, mode, and/or movement of literature. A poet may not be classified so readily, but like a bedlam lepidopterist the crowd labels the poet, pins his wings and decides if he is to hang in a place of honor on the wall (under constricting glass of course) or be filed away amidst endless drawers. Those filed away become footnotes to academics and forgotten by the public. Vernon Watkins was, alas, a word-drunk rhapsodist. The crowd had already awarded that post to Watkins' dear friend Dylan Thomas.

Watkins was considered part of the New Apocalypse poetry set, yet he held more affinity with Yeats than with Barker. His poetry has much in common with Thomas, but Thomas did not equal him until his dying days ("In the White Giant's Thigh" and whatnot). Where Dylan was knotted and confused Vernon was woven and allusive. Vernon was a perfectionist with a wonderful, though unusual, ear for language. Fellow poet Kathleen Raine said it best: "Not Yeats himself could spin those gossamer lines, strung with their words like perfect spheres of dew, that characterise Vernon Watkins' finest lyrics; yet that gossamer is held by forces strong and coterminous with the universe."

The poems in this volume are sublime: the recurring classical images of nature and myth deftly handled, the rhythms by turn soothing and soaring, the glorious glorious language. Imagine if a cache of previously unknown Hopkins or Thomas poems turned up . . . you would be, or should be, justifiably ecstatic. Well, such a fortuitous happening is not likely, but seeking out the poetry of Vernon Watkins will have a similar effect upon you. The year or vineyard may vary, but the vintage is heavenly nontheless.

I leave you now, wanting, but here stands a stanza from "Ophelia:"

Stunned in the stone light, laid among the lilies,/ Still in the green wave, graven in the reed-bed,/ Lip-read by clouds in the language of the shallows./ Lie there, reflected.

College Trigonometry

Authors: Richard N. Aufmann, Vernon C. Barker, and Richard D. Nation
Average review score:

Excellent way to learn trig!
I used this textbook with a high school independent study course that I took through a university. This book taught me more about mathematics than any previous book I have studied.

As I said, I used this book with an independent study program, but it was absolutely no problem learning the material. This book teaches you trigonometry in an easy-to-understand and thorough way. I didn't have a teacher, and I didn't need one with this book.

This book is excellent for learning trigonometry, and a great preparation for calculus. If you want to learn trig, buy this book!

Communicating in Science : Writing a Scientific Paper and Speaking at Scientific Meetings
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (April, 1993)
Author: Vernon Booth
Average review score:

Vernon Booth: a classic in scientific writing
This book is by one of the first authors to recognise that communication skills are important in science, and that they are a craft that has rules and principles that any student can learn relatively easily. It deserves to be treated as a classic, and should be compulsory reading for any student of the life sciences.

I can recall reading it with much interest during my PhD in the 1980's, when it was about the only work available in this field, and various biochemical societies in the UK made it available to students. Much of the advice on straightforward communication style is still extremely valid today. In the later 80's and 90's, the field of writing skills took off, and now most University bookshops have several shelves of books on writing skills and how to write a thesis. Booth's book is short, direct, and the advice is very practical. Read it!

Corals of the World, Vol. 1, 2, 3 (in Slip Cover)
Published in Hardcover by Odyssey Publishing (December, 2000)

Corals of the World
JEN Veron is by far the most talented researcher when it comes to Coral classification. I just received his 3 volume reference "Corals of the World" and spent about 6 hours reading and reviewing. If you are a Reef Aquarium hobbiest or simply appreciate Coral classification and taxonomy this reference is an absolute must have. I have Veron's other reference "Corals of Australia and Indo-Pacific and it too is remarkable in every sense. If you are a reef hobbiest and simply need an easy reference book on coral care and compatabilty this publication might not be for you. However, if your a serious reef keeper, the money spent on this reference is worth every penny. The reference primarily gives you highly acurate coral clasifaction and taxonomy. The photos are astoundingly amazing as well. I give this book marks well above 5 stars. I seriusly doubt that there will ever be another book published with this type of information. I consider my new reference set one of my most prized possesions.

Cosmic Command
Published in Paperback by New Life Foundation (August, 1979)
Author: Vernon Howard
Average review score:

Sanity in short sentences
Cosmic Command is a strange title, but it captures what Vernon Howard taught, ie., that above our usual, learned thinking is a part of us that "knows," that is not caught in the mire of tension, appearances or egotism. I have read many of Howard's books, and "The Power of Your Supermind" is a good place to begin, as it is clearly written and eases you into his philosophy. Cosmic Command is a collection of very short epigrams that crystallize the essence of his thinking. "Pretense is tense." "Do not give your life away to the neurosis of other people, for it is not required of you." "Correct the mind and we lose the burden of correcting everything else." I highly recommend Cosmic Command, but keep reading if you don't get it at first. At some point you will, and the result will be like the lights coming on at the annual haunted house...the hoax of fear and illusion is exposed.

Counseling Children and Adolescents

A "Must Have" for School Counselors
I am pleased this text was selected for my graduate level course in Counselor Education. As an elementary School Counselor, I am involved with a diversity of issues. Counseling Children and Adolescents is a comprehensive manual offering intervention techniques and developmentally appropriate strategies to address problems of children. It is an easy to read book with an abundance of valuable information. I found very useful the information on brief therapy, family counseling, and working with exceptionalities. This text will be among the first I seek whenever confronted with a challenging behavioral problem. The practical nature of this book makes it a must have for beginning and experienced counselors.

Creole Drum: An Anthology of Creole Literature in Surinam
Published in Paperback by Kegan Paul (September, 2003)
Authors: Jan Voorhoeve, Ursy M. Litchtveld, and Vernon February
Average review score:

A triumph of artistry and scholarship
The small South American nation of Suriname (also spelled "Surinam") is one of the most linguistically, ethnically, and religiously diverse nations on the earth. A former Dutch colony, Suriname has a population consisting of several distinct cultural groups. One of the most remarkable aspects of Surinamese life is Sranan Tongo, the creole language which is unique to this country.

In "Creole Drum," editors Jan Voorhoeve and Ursy M. Lichtveld have assembled a marvelous anthology of Sranan Tongo texts. The book's useful bilingual format has the original Sranan Tongo on each even-numbered page, with Vernie A. February's English translation on the facing page.

This is more than just an anthology; the book is a richly informative introduction to Surinamese history and to the Sranan Tongo language. The explanatory essays and appendices, together with a useful bibliography and index, make this book an outstanding reference work.

But the heart of "Creole Drum" is the collected and translated literature. Included are traditional folksongs and folktales, a selection of prose writings of 19th century author Johannes King, selections from the Surinamese periodical "Foetoe-boi," examples of Surinamese poetry of the 1960s and 70s, and more.

Some of my favorite selections from "Creole Drum" were the poems of Johanna Schouten-Elsenhout, whose startling visions dramatize the conflict between Pagan and Christian religious practices in Suriname.

This book is a valuable contribution not only to Suriname studies, but also to the overlapping field of Creole language studies. Pidgin and creole languages are a worldwide phenomenon, and the editors of "Creole Drum" brilliantly illuminate the distinctive creole language of Suriname.

This is a thought-provoking book which will inspire readers to explore questions about race, religion, national identity, ethnicity, and language politics. But more than that, it contains some startlingly powerful and beautiful literature which should be enjoyed as much as studied. The Surinamese poet Henny F. de Ziel, who uses the pseudonym "Trefossa," wrote "A true poem is another land. . . / A true poem is made of words that linger on." "Creole Drum" will take you to another land, and the best of its offerings will linger in your soul.
