Great book for business students and managers

The Singing Lush Welshman to Dylan Thomas' Welsh LushWatkins was considered part of the New Apocalypse poetry set, yet he held more affinity with Yeats than with Barker. His poetry has much in common with Thomas, but Thomas did not equal him until his dying days ("In the White Giant's Thigh" and whatnot). Where Dylan was knotted and confused Vernon was woven and allusive. Vernon was a perfectionist with a wonderful, though unusual, ear for language. Fellow poet Kathleen Raine said it best: "Not Yeats himself could spin those gossamer lines, strung with their words like perfect spheres of dew, that characterise Vernon Watkins' finest lyrics; yet that gossamer is held by forces strong and coterminous with the universe."
The poems in this volume are sublime: the recurring classical images of nature and myth deftly handled, the rhythms by turn soothing and soaring, the glorious glorious language. Imagine if a cache of previously unknown Hopkins or Thomas poems turned up . . . you would be, or should be, justifiably ecstatic. Well, such a fortuitous happening is not likely, but seeking out the poetry of Vernon Watkins will have a similar effect upon you. The year or vineyard may vary, but the vintage is heavenly nontheless.
I leave you now, wanting, but here stands a stanza from "Ophelia:"
Stunned in the stone light, laid among the lilies,/ Still in the green wave, graven in the reed-bed,/ Lip-read by clouds in the language of the shallows./ Lie there, reflected.

Excellent way to learn trig!As I said, I used this book with an independent study program, but it was absolutely no problem learning the material. This book teaches you trigonometry in an easy-to-understand and thorough way. I didn't have a teacher, and I didn't need one with this book.
This book is excellent for learning trigonometry, and a great preparation for calculus. If you want to learn trig, buy this book!

Vernon Booth: a classic in scientific writingI can recall reading it with much interest during my PhD in the 1980's, when it was about the only work available in this field, and various biochemical societies in the UK made it available to students. Much of the advice on straightforward communication style is still extremely valid today. In the later 80's and 90's, the field of writing skills took off, and now most University bookshops have several shelves of books on writing skills and how to write a thesis. Booth's book is short, direct, and the advice is very practical. Read it!

Great Book!

A triumph of artistry and scholarshipIn "Creole Drum," editors Jan Voorhoeve and Ursy M. Lichtveld have assembled a marvelous anthology of Sranan Tongo texts. The book's useful bilingual format has the original Sranan Tongo on each even-numbered page, with Vernie A. February's English translation on the facing page.
This is more than just an anthology; the book is a richly informative introduction to Surinamese history and to the Sranan Tongo language. The explanatory essays and appendices, together with a useful bibliography and index, make this book an outstanding reference work.
But the heart of "Creole Drum" is the collected and translated literature. Included are traditional folksongs and folktales, a selection of prose writings of 19th century author Johannes King, selections from the Surinamese periodical "Foetoe-boi," examples of Surinamese poetry of the 1960s and 70s, and more.
Some of my favorite selections from "Creole Drum" were the poems of Johanna Schouten-Elsenhout, whose startling visions dramatize the conflict between Pagan and Christian religious practices in Suriname.
This book is a valuable contribution not only to Suriname studies, but also to the overlapping field of Creole language studies. Pidgin and creole languages are a worldwide phenomenon, and the editors of "Creole Drum" brilliantly illuminate the distinctive creole language of Suriname.
This is a thought-provoking book which will inspire readers to explore questions about race, religion, national identity, ethnicity, and language politics. But more than that, it contains some startlingly powerful and beautiful literature which should be enjoyed as much as studied. The Surinamese poet Henny F. de Ziel, who uses the pseudonym "Trefossa," wrote "A true poem is another land. . . / A true poem is made of words that linger on." "Creole Drum" will take you to another land, and the best of its offerings will linger in your soul.
